When you create your character, you will be placed into the MUD school. This is where you can practice skills, use trains, and hunt in the arena until you are level 6. For the first couple levels, you will want to target the 'plasm beasts'. After that, you can be a bit more adventurous and try out some of the other creatures.
You cannot be player killed (PK-ed) until you reach level 10, so at the beginning you just need to worry about getting a handle on your surroundings. Characters at low level do not lose experience from dying, so don't get discouraged when you slip up.
Other characters in the game will likely be more than willing to help and give advice if you ask (but please stay in-character!). The newbie channel and forums are where you can ask out-of-character questions to your heart's content, and we encourage you to do so.
